Mark J. Weingarden, DMD
A love of learning and science and a strong desire to help people lead better lives motivated Dr. Weingarden to choose periodontics as his profession. He enjoys the challenges that periodontics presents him on a daily basis, particularly the opportunity to help patients with difficult dental problems through skilled problem solving, planning and treatment.
Dr. Weingarden has pursued interdisciplinary training, incorporating prosthetics (replacement of teeth) and orthodontics into his periodontal skill set. This unique background enables him to evaluate a patient’s dental issues with greater understanding. It also aids him in rehabilitating patients with extensive dental needs, such as patients with complex bite issues or multiple tooth loss.
Above all, Dr. Weingarden loves getting the planned results of his treatment. “Patients are healthier, often look better, and can have a sense of security and confidence because of what we do,” says Dr. Weingarden.

Dr. Weingarden is never accepting of the status quo. He continually updates his skill sets, brings new technologies to the practice and looks for ways to be provide more cost efficient treatment for his patients. He is well known and well respected by colleagues both nationally and internationally.
In 1993, Dr. Weingarden founded the Pittsburgh Dental Network (PDN), a study group that consists of a select group of outstanding dentists and specialists who join together in their pursuit of higher learning. It is recognized as one of the most advanced continuing education groups for dental professionals in the nation.
Members participate in hands-on demonstrations, problem-solving workshops, panel discussions and clinical treatment planning sessions. PDN invites internationally known speakers to share information at local meetings, keeping Pittsburgh in the forefront of dental technology.
What this means for you as a patient is that Dr. Weingarden has made a commitment to lifelong learning so that he can provide you with the best dental care possible.
Extensive education, experience and training
Dr. Weingarden received his undergraduate education at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine in 1979, and due to high academic standing in his class, was accepted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the Honorary Dental Society.
His post-doctoral training was completed at the University of Pennsylvania, Department of Periodontics in 1981. Dr. Weingarden’s training at the University of PA was interdisciplinary. His program was one of only two in the world that educated periodontal students in prosthetics and orthodontics for adults, affording him expertise in treating complex cases.
He was an assistant clinical Professor of Periodontics at the University of Pittsburgh and lectured to post-doctoral orthodontic students on occlusion, (study of the bite). In 1989, he became Board Certified by the American Academy of Periodontology.
Dr. Weingarden served as President of the North Dental Branch of the local Dental Society and the Western Pennsylvania Society of Periodontics. He also served as President of the Pennsylvania Society of Periodontology and is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Academy of Osseointegration.
His awards include the Elliott Brodie Award for Clinical Competence “in recognition for clinical skill and proficiency in patient care” and the Gilbert Robin Scholarship Award for “having attained the highest scholastic average of his fraternity for four years.”
He has been voted “Top Dentist” in Pittsburgh each year since 2011.
Dr. Weingarden firmly believes in prevention, and when dental treatment is needed, providing treatment that will last. He has lectured extensively over the years to dental groups, dental residents, dental students and hygienists and is currently lecturing nationally. Topics of interest include: Dental Implants, The Benefits of Prevention, and Providing Optimal Care at Reduced Cost for Patients.
Outside the office
Dr. Weingarden resides in Fox Chapel with his wife Debi and their dog Lucy. His children, Jonathan and Hilary are both pursuing their PhD in psychology. Dr. Weingarden’s hobbies include exercise, golf and 30 years of practicing and teaching karate.
Sam Bakuri, DMD, MSD
Dr. Sam Bakuri is a Board certified Periodontist and has been a dentist for over ten years. He earned his DMD degree from the prestigious Ivy League University of Pennsylvania. He furthered his education with three years of periodontal training at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he also earned a Master of Science in Dentistry.
Helping others is Dr. Bakuri’s passion. He believes in comprehensive treatment and understands that dental health is very important to a person’s overall health. He enjoys seeing his patients smile, be happy, healthy and confident.
Extended education and teaching experience
Dr. Bakuri is an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, where he teaches periodontics and implantology to dental students and residents. He is certified in IV sedation and he is also on faculty at the Allegheny General Hospital. He has lectured on dental implant procedures for the American Academy of Periodontics and is a guest lecturer for universities and institutions throughout the U.S.
As founder and director of the Pittsburgh Dental Horizon Study Club, Dr. Bakuri is dedicated to bringing outstanding continuing education to dentists in the Tri-State community.
Dr. Bakuri is the recipient of the George Coslet Award in Periodontics from the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the Golden Key Honor society.
To help our fellow citizens who are not able to afford dental care, Dr. Bakuri volunteers with the Remote Area Medical in Wise County, Virginia.
Outside the office
Dr. Bakuri’s wife is also a dentist, and they have a daughter, Tiba. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling and landscape photography.
